Call it gullibility, complacency, ignorance or stupidity, it's a disconnect from reality engineered by the Great Communicator himself!  Reagan took advantage of these poor souls and, since 2000, the Republican Congresses have just dug us deeper into red earth!

Those were days we'll never see again after Bush and his Congressional spendthrifts' attempt to implement Grover Norquist's government-reduction program: if you can't shrink government, put it so far in debt that it can't afford to do anything but pay debt service.  They added a spin, too: make your friends rich in the process!

I once had the honor of spending an evening with Harvard economist and Nobel winner Wassily Leontif who told the story of his first consulting job after leaving Russia - it was with the Chinese government and they wanted to build a national railroad.  It was 1931 or so, China was something less than a dirt-poor nation, and the Chinese officials were outta financing ideas.  Leontif's advice?  Issue bonds in the international market, secured by the railroad assets - and forget about the interest rate that would entail! 

But, but, but.. when the Chinese pointed out that they didn't have a prayer of meeting the debt service, Leontif replied, "Don't - get the money then default!"  And they did!

I've chuckled over that for a decade but, the way things are going, the US may be forced into a similar strategy - but before then, things will get real tough!

Another sidebar: I think even if McCain were elected, so long as we have a Democratic Congress, Obama's tax program will be enacted - even McCain couldn't veto it, the alternative would eventually be the Leontif solution!

And, the issue isn't really NO NEW TAXES - we're way beyond that - it's WHICH NEW TAXES WILL DO THE LEAST ECONOMIC DAMAGE?

There were no tax cuts under Bush.

He has cut present taxes, while increasing the debt levels, which is merely deferring the tax burden from today's taxpayer, to tomorrow's taxpayers.

Phaedrus, I stand corrected!  The Bu$hite cartel has gifted its cronies with the wealth of our children and grandchildren.  

And those cronies will be the landholders while our children and grandchildren toil in serfdom as they struggle to pay the back breaking runaway interest on the debt, never mind the principle.

This is a time-honored Dimocrat class warfare tactic; the Republicans are keeping you down but "in no other country would my story even be possible." Say what, I am a winner, a member of a the Dimocrat elite, your a loser and it's "their" fault the fat cat Republicans. This would be comical if it didn't lead to the belief that governance is too dangerous to be left up to democracy because the people left to their own choices will vote against what the Progryssve cadre define as their own best interest.

Dimocrats calling Republicans Kool Aid drinkers is classic transference, enraptured masses chanting Change, Change and yes, we can with no substantive definition behind it in support of a candidate with no experience, no achievement and shakey judgement is the epitome of Kool Aid drinking. The only defense is to accuse the other side of the tactic you employ, claiming they do it and its bad, to deflect  attention from your tactics.

With the apparent selection on Gov Palin as VP expect the tolerant progressive movement to begin there assault. How long do you think it will take for them to attack HER inexperience or claim her and McCain are doin the "dirty" or some other sleez attack?
