Soldier: Honor troops like Va. Tech dead

“KABUL, Afghanistan -- An Army sergeant complained in a rare opinion article that the U.S. flag flew at half-staff last week at the largest U.S. base in Afghanistan for those killed at Virginia Tech but the same honor is not given to fallen U.S. troops here and in Iraq.”

This occupier of the White House has the unmitigated gall to grandstand in front of the student body at Virginia Tech when he has never to my knowledge met a flag draped coffin returned from his Iraq legacy. ..

Now he has ordered all flags at Federal installations be flown at half staff for the slain students. What about all of our slain soldiers?!? ..

What a callous political phony!! When does the lightening strike anyway?!?

Tom Carter, I see a thoughtful wisdom in the positions you are espousing here at VofA. They are sometimes packaged in perhaps intemperate wrappings, but you are an idealist, like the label or not.

And I agree with you in general, if not in every particular.

You have a healthy mistrust of power. Power has earned that mistrust and richly deserves it.

You are, as Socrates described himself, a gadfly to power. Your warnings are prescient I am afraid. I hope you don’t sip the hemlock, although I suspect you will if need be rather than back down on the truth as you see it. That is heroic.

It is more heroic than most of us are. That includes almost 100% of the civilians that go into the military, if measured by your yardstick. It’s a very high bar to hurdle, and most cannot hurdle it. That does not make us cowards – simply not heroic in the same determined way that you are.

I for one appreciate your insights. And I appreciate the dilemma for the individual that is caught between your high moral standards and the power of the crowd as manifested in the State. This is a particularly onerous burden for the citizen soldier.

Indeed Bush doesn’t give a f*** for that soldier. He personifies the The negative extreme, which is to shut others out, or worse, make others into objects, set pieces on the stage of his own limited understanding.* He is such a coward that he addresses only sanitized audiences, most often captive soldiers on domestic military bases with a phalanx of sober face soldiers as a backdrop. Absolutely detestable!!

I suspect you, I and Leonard Clark can agree on Bush's cowardice.

Az. Mod.. I agree with you that Bush is possessed by "It". On this item I believe all agree. But let me re-affirm: it will be to my last dying breath that all of my comrades who have served in any war are victims with the victims, war is insanity and even though I am against ever tresspassing in the domain of GOD, I wish somehow they could invent a way to end all war.

Too kind, yes. Perhaps cynical would fit better. Or doomsayer?

But I have to say TC has some valid points of view as well as some, shall we say, less than uplifiting points of view?

The gadfly function is a thankless job, but somebody has to do it.
