The reasons for the Three AM (03:00) text message by Obama’s campaign are twofold:    

       

1.The nationwide traffic on the telephone networks that had to carry the message is minimal between 24:00 (00:00 )and 03:00, with the traffic ramping up fast after that as the East Coast awakens for the day.     

·        A message sent out at 03:00 in the East Coast timezone

·        would be received at 02:00 in the Central timezone,

·        would be received at 01:00 in the Mountain timezone, and

·        would be received at 24:00 in the Pacific timezone.

Given that, the 03:00 message from the East Coast made the best use of the infrastructure in a given 24:00 period.     

   

2.      How would the campaign reward the true believers with the news before it became generally known?  You can bet that there were many Republicans and all of the media people on the list to receive the text message.  The only way to blunt that was to release the information in the dead of night while the general population slept and only those that got the call would be awakened by it.  So the media and Republicans got it; wouldn’t do much good while the nation (except for the true believers) slept.
