Today, I got pulled over by the police. I guess, there was a misunderstanding about my license plate according to the police officer. My car, a Subaru was reported in a check of my license plate as a Suburban, and of course, he would think, going by his experience with stolen vehicles, someone would change the plates on their car to hide the fact that they are driving a stolen auto. You can imagine the scene, me being ordered on my knees, hands behind my head, and then handcuffed. Yep, I was scared out of my wits. I was so nervous I...well, lets just say I had to go home after my ordeal and change my clothes. Again here, I am not blaming the police, or anyone, nor am I really upset about it. In fact, I commend them for being so understanding, and polite, even apologizing to me after they were able to determine that it was a mistake.
As I came to my senses, I thought of something regarding the current situation involving the Department of Justice, and Attorney General Gonzales. How much more dangerous it is to this free society to undermine the judicial process in favor of partisanship. It is something being under discussed in lieu of naming names and screaming accusations. It is much more dangerous than any terrorist could be to us. I will try to explain my view.
I see justice as the main pillar of our free society. Justice keeps those with criminal intentions from running the show. Justice keeps those who have been done wrong from seeking revenge in uncivil fashion. Justice, above all else is a perception held by the individual. Many people resort to uncivil acts, including violence when they feel that justice will be denied them. They simply take the law into their own hands, because, regardless of the facts, they somehow believe that because of who they are, or what they believe, or who they oppose, the law will be biased against them. You can't deny, as you look around this world, that many of the conflicts are because some people have been so vilified that they simply do not even attempt civil action in a proper court setting...they go for the guns. Of course, usually it is to their own demise, but in their thinking, it becomes "since I am going to die anyway, I might as well take a few of them too". Just being blunt here.
This past revelation that our American Department of Justice may have been undermined by partisan politics is much more frightening than the words I can use here will describe. It means that justice is no longer perceived as fair, equal, and regardless of the facts, will favour those who support the partisan agenda. You must remember that this was not something thought up the night before at the pub. A provision was slipped into a "must pass' bill without debate in order to bypass the customary way these things are done. The people fired were selected because they did not meet the partisan standard. Excuses (lies) were made up beforehand in case questions were asked. Even the "impact on the partisan" was debated and estimated beforehand. Luckily, this was underestimated, and we are beginning to get a grip on how they determined to stay in power, long after those who implemented this sinister plan were gone.
We have to also ask the question..."What did those who kept their jobs to not to be fired?" What would those who will (or would have) replaced the fired attorney's generals do that would appease their partisan masters? How many cases were trumped up to advance the spirit of fear, and make us so ever ready to hand over our freedoms and privacy to the savior. How many innocent people are in jail, and how many guilty people are free because justice was replaced by partisanship. These questions crack the very foundation of our free society, simply because we now have had our perceptions broken by this scandal. To me, this is much worse to our democracy than any terrorist could have ever done.
Next time you are pulled over...think about this. Are you on the "right side" of justice? Ma'am, may I see your registration, proof of insurance and party card please?
