Alright, so this is a little provocative, but hear me out I've got a hunch about this one. Ever since the last election I've had this feeling that McConnell wasn't comfortable in his new position. I believe he likes to operate behind the scenes as opposed to the lime light. He doesn't come off well under the spot lights.

To start this off let me remind you that his fellow statesman and cohort in crime Jim Bunning will no doubt be gone next term one way or the other. The guy is cracking up he's seeing assassins around every corner. Trust me he'll be soundly defeated or he'll retire. The last campaign he nearly lost to State Senator Dan Mongiardo. In the last weeks of the campaign Senators Bunning and McConnell made a bus trip to Western Kentucky along the way they started rumors about Sen Mongiardo's sexuality and stated outright lies about his practice as a physician. Bunning was beaten till the Western Kentucky vote came in. Some here haven't forgotten that.

Yes Mitch is well financed but he has a lot of baggage this time and several groups have gotten a head start on the "Ditch Mitch" campaign. He will have to spend a lot for his seat this year and the fact there are so many up for grabs there will be less party money to help out in a tight spot. McConnell's not dumb, and I'm sure he's heard the rumors circulating concerning his sexual orientation. There are those who would love for something like that to hit the news. Mitch is under a lot of pressure and I'm not so sure he's up to it.

Here's the scenario I see playing out. Ann Northup is still smarting from her primary lose to the, soon to be, former Governor of Kentucky Dirty Ernie Fletcher. She is however a fighter, albeit down and dirty, a fighter none the less. The Democratic field is still a little weak and I think McConnell believes he could get her elected to his seat a lot easier than he could hold on to it. I believe he's going to resign and try and get her elected.

With Bunning gone and he's assured a hostile congress to work with for the next 6 years, at least. I don't see why he'd want to stay to be honest with you. Don't be surprised if he announces before the end of the month. Were I in his shoes that's what I'd do.
